This delightful picture book uses black and white toned pencil drawings with occasional vibrant colour to highlight the bananas, carrots and selected items such as the monkey tree houses. The quirky depiction of the monkeys adds to the charm of this story and simple rhyming text makes this a good read-aloud. Young children will identify with young Lou McGrew’s boredom when served his daily dose of bananas for breakfast lunch and tea. The outcome of the story is humorous and suitable for prediction exercises with young children. The text is large and uses a sans serif font appropriate for beginning readers.
Level: Early childhood, beginning readers.
Curriculum: food, animals, prediction
