In the lead up to the big celebrations for ANZAC Day, it is great that the war novel is reemerging as a force. Although set in the UK I am sure that the stories of courage and adventure are those experienced by our own soldiers – many of whom would have been part of similar events.

Adam Chisolm is from a poor background. When war breaks out he enlists in the Merchant Navy as a way to escape home and to fulfil his dream of going to sea. The novel is full of on board details as to what life was really like for the sailors, especially the youngsters who signed up.

A great adventure novel.
